Score: 7 / 10

One-line verdict

A solid mystery-action blend with strong pacing, even if the villain doesn’t fully land.

Why I watched this

I’ve always wanted to watch the Tom Cruise version before jumping into the series on Prime.

Also, I initially thought this was part of the Jack Ryan universe. Turns out I mixed them up — both Jacks, both action heroes. Easy mistake.

So I went in with almost zero knowledge about Jack Reacher.

Story & Structure

The movie starts strong.

A series of murders happens, and you actually see how it unfolds. But instead of it being straightforward, the blame falls on someone else — and that guy specifically calls for Jack Reacher to prove his innocence.

That’s my kind of setup.

Mystery + investigation + action.

Even though the movie shows you the crime upfront, it doesn’t give everything away. The deeper layers unfold gradually, which keeps it engaging.

There’s also a female lead, Rosamund Pike, playing the defense lawyer who works alongside Reacher. Their dynamic works well enough to carry the investigation side of the story.

What worked

  • The mystery structure is engaging.
  • Good pacing — it keeps moving without dragging.
  • Tom Cruise fits the role better than expected.
  • Plot reveals are handled well enough to keep you guessing.

It’s one of those movies where you think you understand what’s going on — then it adds another layer.

What didn’t

The main villain, The Zec, just doesn’t land.

He’s supposed to be intimidating, but I didn’t feel it. It felt like the movie was trying too hard to make him scary instead of letting it happen naturally.

Honestly, Jai Courtney’s character alone would have been enough. He could’ve been expanded into something bigger, maybe even leading into a larger syndicate for future stories.

Also, the main motive — business takeover — feels a bit weak. And the fact that they chose to frame someone connected to Reacher feels like extremely bad luck on the villain’s part.

What others think

The first Jack Reacher is generally well received. Many viewers appreciate its grounded tone and mystery-driven plot, especially compared to typical action films.

Critics also tend to agree it’s stronger than its sequel.

I’m aligned with that.

Final thoughts

This is a good movie.

Not perfect, but enjoyable.

Strong setup, decent execution, and a mystery that keeps you interested.

This sits at 7 / 10.

A solid entry point before moving into the sequel and eventually the series.
