Jack Reacher : Never Go Back (2016)

Score: 5 / 10
Category: Movie
Platform: Netflix

One-line verdict

A sequel that tries to be bigger and more complex, but ends up weaker and less convincing.

Why I watched this

I went into this because I enjoyed the first Jack Reacher. It was simple, direct, and effective.

So naturally, I wanted to complete the sequel.

Story & Structure

The movie starts exactly how you’d expect — establishing how capable and dangerous Jack Reacher is.

Then the main plot kicks in. A Major is framed for a crime she didn’t commit, and because Reacher has a soft spot for her, he gets involved.

Straightforward enough.

But the story quickly becomes layered — maybe too layered.

It feels like the movie is trying to add complexity for the sake of it. Multiple threads overlap, and instead of making things more engaging, it just feels unnecessarily messy.

The antagonist is written as a mirror of Reacher — equally skilled, equally ruthless. But in reality, he never feels as intimidating. He’s supposed to be the equal, but he doesn’t carry the same presence.

What worked

  • Tom Cruise still delivers as Jack Reacher.
  • Cobie Smulders is a strong addition and easy to root for.
  • Familiar “bad guy faces” like Robert Knepper and Holt McCallany fit their roles well.

It’s still watchable because of the cast.

What didn’t

The writing is where it falls apart.

  • The Samantha subplot (potential daughter) feels underexplained. There’s no proper reasoning behind it, which makes it feel like lazy writing.
  • A stolen credit card being traced but not blocked is just… sloppy. Small detail, but it breaks logic.
  • The antagonist lacks presence compared to Reacher.
  • The layered plot adds confusion instead of depth.

It tries to be smarter than it is.

What others think

Reception for this sequel is generally weaker than the first film. Most viewers and critics agree it lacks the tight storytelling and simplicity that made the original enjoyable.

I’m aligned with that.

Final thoughts

This is a step down from the first movie.

More complicated, less effective.

Still watchable because of Tom Cruise, but not memorable.

This sits at 5 / 10.

Disappointing sequel.
Time to move on to the series instead.
